Text:  Matthew 5:13-16

Intro:  Is there really a place for me in missions?

Backing up in the text of Matthew 5 it’s very clear Jesus’ is fully after “heart motives” in the sermon on the mount.  He summaries the sermon in Matthew 6:8 – “do not be like them.”

I am entrusted by God to influence my world. (v 13)

  • Christ wants us to be a preserving agent to the world – preserving His righteousness (v 13a)
  • Roman soldiers were often paid in salt.
  • Salt does not lose it’s “saltiness” but it can become diluted or defiled.  Basically people don’t lose their salvation, if they are truly saved they just become ineffective for the Kingdom growth.

The church is empowered by God to illuminate the world (v 14).

  • “you are the light” is a plural references meaning all Christians

The effect of good works is increased glory to God (v 16).

It’s the first tax filing after the divorce.  My new client, the woman in the divorce, informs be that she received a substantial payment from her husbands retirement plan.  She said that income tax was withheld from the distribution so she hoped to get a refund.  I did her tax return and had to inform her that still owed a substantial amount of taxes.  I had asked her if it was explained to her that the distribution would put her in a much higher tax bracket.  She said no.  And she had even told her attorney that she didn’t want something other than a cash settlement.  So she ended up having to take her husband to court to try and collect some of the additional taxes and possibly incur additional court costs, she needed to file an Installment Agreement with the Internal Revenue Service because she could not pay the tax by April 15th.  So she needed to pay for the agreement itself as well as additional interest.

Please review these 12 considerations to help you avoid some of the heartaches that I have seen over and over from a spouse who thought they had been taken advantage of by the ex-spouse as well as receiving poor legal representation.

1. The Law of Significance says “One is too small a number to achieve greatness.”

- “Self-made people don’t make much.”

- “Nothing of significance can be accomplished by one person.”
